Green ice cream kind of day

What do you do on cold winter days?   We eat ice cream apparently.

We are anticipating March and all things green.

My youngest has been sick again.  Today I made him “green ice cream” because his favorite color is green.  This made for a fun treat today that I enjoyed as well.  I have great memories of my mom making this for me when I was a kid.

Wesley gave it 2 thumbs up.  I was happy to see him smile.

Green ice cream

-3 Tbs nestle malt

-2 big scoops of ice cream (or more)

-3/4 cup milk (or more)

-2 Tbs creme de menthe

Blend.  Taste and add more ice cream or milk, mint to your preference depending on how thin or thick you like it and how strong you like your mint flavor.

Oh the deliciousness.

Birdseed ornaments

2015-12-23 (1)

“The kids helped with these.”  I don’t know what I’m going to do when the kids move out of the house and my crafts still look the same.  This was a fun project though and I’m excited to give them to the grandparents.

-4 cups bird seed

-1/2 cup water

-2 packets of unflavored gelatin

-1/3 cup corn starch

-3 Tbsp corn syrup

Place ornaments, molds or cups on wax paper and spray with non stick cooking spray.

Dissolve gelatin into 1/2 of water on the stove over medium heat.  Add the corn starch slowly mixing to incorporate, add the 3 Tbsp corn syrup.  This will thicken and then it is ready to add the 4 cups of bird seed.   Quickly add to ornaments on wax paper, pressing down with spoon.  Make a hole to use to hang up.  Put in fridge for 1/2 hour.  I used my husbands drill to make the holes because seemed too difficult to do with a straw for me.  Do what works for you.

Jingle in the Junction

Last year at this time, we were visiting family in California.  We have great memories of visiting a candy shop, watching them make candy canes right in front of us and having an ice cream treat.  For one of the before Christmas things with the kids, I thought it’d be fun to visit the candy store in Valley Junction and let them pick something out.  I secretly hope they have candy canes!  But if not, I’m confident there will be something we all will enjoy.

Thursday nights are a great time to visit Valley Junction, especially during Jingle in the Junction.  This is shopping business district that will be decorated in tons of lights and has horse drawn carriage rides, among other activities for the kids.  The last two times this season are, December 3rd, 5 – 9pm and December 10, 5 – 9pm.

While I’m there, I’d also like to make a point to visit 9 Lives Thrift Shop because I have never been there.  And Zeus Stained Glass Studio, because I would love to take a stained glass class at some point in my life.  I’ll also stop at the gift & novelty stores in case something jumps out as a great present for someone I know.  Of course, I’ll visit the heart of Iowa store, because I love all things Iowa.

Hope you are enjoying your December 2015!  It’s the only one we get.
